Bad Bunny – DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS

DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS immediately makes it clear that this is a Puerto Rican album. Bad Bunny has filled it with his hometown sounds. Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti and reggaeton as a whole was largely a flavoring of the already dominant blend of singing and rapping that defines the past decade and a half of music. This is uncompromising in how it draws from a different well and very exciting music as a result.

Bad Bunny’s ability to make infectious music is what really makes this work though. He is an unquestionable hitmaker and incredibly sincere in his work. The album would have been lifted by a true single, but it’s consistent, likeable music and the deep Latin influence twisting the reggaeton is a pleasure.

Rosalía – MOTOMAMI

MOTOMAMI is the greatest reggaeton album ever made. Rosalía was already a superstar and yet she has found a way to be larger still, and even more impressively, to do so on her own terms. MOTOMAMI does not fall cleanly into any box, but instead draws from apparently every influence that Rosalía can bring to the table and the result is dizzying.

This shows up well in the fun “CANDY.” She brings great emotion and fascinating sounds from a range uncompromising in its scope and makes the song fun to boot. She is every bit as fun in “CHICKEN TERIYAKI.” The music is clever, lively and so very individual.

For all of that though, she is still capable of “HENTAI,” a slower indie rock cut. She does it well, even if I prefer the reggaeton and her versatility is stunning. This is what allows for the standout “LA FAMA,” not only the best track on the album, but also The Weeknd as good as he has ever been, but somehow in Spanish.

MOTOMAMI is everything you could ask for and yet does not have a single fragment of pandering from Rosalía. This is her album entirely and we are all the better for it.

Ozuna – ENOC

If you haven’t tried modern reggaeton yet, Ozuna has just made the album for you. The Spanish-speaking Carribean mix of dancehall, rap and singing has had plenty of mainstream success already, but this album feels built for crossover appeal.

Ozuma just brings so much energy and so much charisma to this album. It’s irresistibly likable. This is at its best in the admittedly slightly basic “Gistro Amarillo.” It’s just too catchy and upbeat to deny.

He’s very good when he keeps that energy up, as he does on “Del Mar” which does really well for the Doja Cat and Sia features, and through most of the album. However, he misses the mark on his slower songs, like “No Se Da Cuenta,” which is made forgettable in part due to the inclusion of the King of Reggaeton himself, Daddy Yankee.

This is definitely the place to start if you want to jump into the new Puerto Rican hotness and is fun enough to be a good time whatever the case.
